Thirty-one degrees Fahrenheit. One degree below freezing.

It doesn't sound like much. Nobody checks the forecast hoping for 31. And sure it can snow at 32. It can even snow at 35 if the atmosphere cooperates. But every skier knows those storms: the ones that hover right at freezing, flipping between snow, rain, and something heavy and heartbreaking in between. At the line, winter is a maybe.

One degree below is where winter commits. Where the "maybe this rain will stop" ends. Where the storm that's been sitting over the range all night has been quietly burying the bowls instead of ruining them.

Every skier and rider knows the feeling of watching that number. Refreshing the forecast in November. Checking the temperature at the base versus the summit.
